Resolution

 

It is possible this is related to the latest HUGHESNET or equiv. satellite ISP update. This new update apparently utilizes multiple IP addresses spread across multiple network paths, which confuses the ASN server system.

 

To resolve this issue, the multiple IP address usage can be disabled by disabling the web acceleration mode in the modem settings.

 

Disabling web acceleration does not appear to actually reduce performance in our experience.  Web acceleration has been noted to cause issues with many services including ASN.

In some cases, ASN may fail to initialize properly, all buttons are “disabled” and gray, and no indication of proper operation is present.

 

 


 

Resolution

 

This condition exists when ASN is unable to initialize its database files or unable to download weather and station data from our server network.

 

In most cases of this issue, ASN is being blocked by security software which in some cases can be over-aggressive by default.  ASN may need to be “excluded”.

 

In other cases, improper path selections or an invalid installation can prevent the database from loading correctly.  Confirming proper paths selected for appdata and simulator location, and attempting a reinstall can clear up most remaining cases of this issue.

 

Another possibility is that IE7 or later is not properly installed on your system, which is required by ASN network communications.  Please check your IE installation, and potentially reinstall IE to see if this helps.  Please also check any network/proxy settings to make sure normal internet access by applications is available.

 

Finally, you may need to uninstall and reinstall .NET (4.0 and 2.0, or 4.5 which includes both).

Description

We often receive technical support requests regarding the unexpected starting and stopping of rain/precip in FEW and SCT (scattered) cloud coverage conditions when rain is reported even though SH (showers) are not indicated.  This is working properly and as designed according to our advanced precipitation and radar simulation which accurately considers actual cloud depiction in sim and applies the realistic behavior/rule that precip cannot fall from clear air.  Clouds move with wind in FSX and P3D, and in FEW and SCT conditions, it is normal for rain to start and stop accordingly as occasional nimbus clouds pass overhead, regardless of SH (showers) element existing in the METAR string.


Details

The effect is described in the AS16 (pg 35) and ASP4 (pg 33) User's Guide - Generic Precipitation Display.

AS16 and ASP4 include advanced precipitation and radar features which constantly monitor the cloud positions as actually depicted within the simulator.  The occurrence, type and intensity of precipitation will thus change depending on the existence, type, thickness and convection properties of the simulated cloud that is overhead the aircraft.

Users will experience what may appear as "showery precip" as "few" or "scattered" nimbus (rain) clouds pass overhead, so it will be normal for rain to start and stop or change intensity over time.

Steady rain will occur when the area is covered in overcast cloud layers or fast moving broken layers (typical with nimbostratus).

METARs are a glimpse in time, showing conditions at the time of observation, using equipment such as ceilometers (measuring cloud base heights and coverage) and rainfall sensors (if equipped).  The measurement location and scope is very specific and small, and does not account for change over time even as short as a few seconds/minutes.  The use of the SH (showers) METAR element is generally associated with convective precipitation i.e. cumulonimbus and not indicated in the more stable non-convective nimbus clouds.

Description

Also known as the "8-minute freeze", this can occur intermittently during a longer flight.  When the freeze occurs, all motion on the simulator stops.  Sound may be observed still playing, but the FS program stops responding.  Approximately 8 minutes later, the simulator "comes back" and operates normally.


 

Resolution

With much research and testing, HiFi has determined that this freeze is related to the threading, affinity and the collision and deadlocking of terrain load fiber processes within FSX.  It is almost unanimously related to use of Hyper-Threading, and can affect any FSX installation, including default/stock installations without any add-ons.  Use of weather add-ons increase the likelihood of this freeze.

 

Since this issue can be made worse when using Active Sky, although it is an FSX problem not directly related to our product, we provide potential solutions below to help anyone experiencing these freezes:

 

1) Use an appropriate AFFINITYMASK setting within your FSX.cfg configuration file.  This setting specifies which cores are used for FSX.  Using too many cores, or improper cores can cause freezes.  If you are using 6 or more cores, it is important to limit the cores used, as too many cores causes synchronization problems and more potential freezes.  We recommend using 3 cores maximum, regardless of HT enabled or not.

 

2) ASN will warn and optionally apply an appropriate AFFINITYMASK setting if it is not already configured.  The setting used will be based on using up to 3 physical cores, but depends on your CPU and number of cores, and if HT is enabled or not.

 

3) Use the UIAUTOMATIONCORE.DLL fix -  http://www.avsim.com/topic/326554-fsx-crashes-when-using-menus/page-3?hl=%2Buiautomationcoredll#entry3122893

 

4) Use lower resolution cloud textures and setting your Cloud Draw Distance to 90 or less.

 

5) Lock frame rate lower - try setting to no more than 30.

 

6) Update video drivers.

 

7) Run FSX in compatibility mode for win 7 (if using win 8 or above).

 

8) Disable SLI if activated. 

 

9) Make sure you are running the latest version of Active Sky (www.hifitechinc.com/downloads) .

Background

 

HiFi does not provide technical support for the SimConnect configuration part of a networked setup.  While our products generally support networked configuration, properly configuring the client/server environment, system permissions, Windows rights, firewall and security software permissions and SimConnect itself is outside the scope of our products and technical support offerings.

 

We highly recommend that a networked SimConnect configuration is not attempted unless you have advanced Windows networking experience.

 

Assuming SimConnect is properly configured and all other client/server environment, system permissions, Windows rights, firewall and security software permission settings are correct, our products should operate properly.

 

Common errors and symptoms related to improper configuration include:

 

  • Failure of ASN/AS16 to connect to simulator (constant "Waiting for simulator" status)
  • Ambients error

 


 

Detail

 

There are several common issues that we'll review here:

 

  • Improper SimConnect.xml and SimConnect.cfg settings
    • This results in failure of ASN/AS16 to find the simulator and connect to it, with a constant "Waiting for simulator" status.
    • The solution is to properly configure SimConnect.  Refer to the resources listed below for help.

 

  • SimConnect.xml and SimConnect.cfg in the wrong locations
    • This results in failure of ASN/AS16 to find the simulator and connect to it, with a constant "Waiting for simulator" status.
    • The solution is to properly place the SimConnect.xml and SimConnect.cfg files.  SimConnect.xml should be located in the simulator's AppData path on the server.  SimConnect.cfg should be located ONLY in the user's My Documents folder.

 

  • Duplicate SimConnect.xml and/or SimConnect.cfg files (usually in the ASN/AS16 folder)
    • This results in failure of ASN/AS16 to find the simulator and connect to it, with a constant "Waiting for simulator" status.
    • The solution is to remove any duplicates and ensure the configuration files are located ONLY in the proper locations (see above).

 

  • XPACK/SP2 version of SimConnect client not installed
    • This results in the failure of ASN/AS16 to find the simulator and connect to it, with a constant "Waiting for simulator" status.
    • A SimConnect client version error may also be seen via message box or in the log file.
    • RESOLUTION:
    • The XPACK/SP2 version of the SimConnect client (simconnect.msi) is required for proper ASN operation and sim connectivity.  This should be installed on your CLIENT computer.
    • For FSX Boxed you must install the SDK and then update it to SP2 incrementally via SP1 and SP1A.  Once updated, the simconnect.msi file within the SDK folders will be properly updated to SP2/XPACK client.
    • For FSX: Steam Edition, you will find the simconnect.msi file under the SDK subfolder, located within the SteamApps\Common\FSX folder.  SDK installation is not required.
    • For P3D: You will find the simconnect.msi file under the REDIST subfolders, located in the P3D install folder.
    • For all simulators:  Ensure that you are using the XPACK/SP2 version of the simconnect.msi file.  Copy the file (if required) to your CLIENT machine and run/install it there.

Getting the right level of performance out of your flight simulator and all add-ons can be a complicated matter, but we will attempt to do our best to inform you of the various options, features and considerations that relate to your overall performance experience.

 

We highly recommend reading the User’s Guide and the Performance Considerations chapter which cover many of the topics and recommendations covered here.

 

Certain settings can drastically affect simulator frame-rate performance.  Some settings influence performance levels differently than others.

 


Resolution

 

After years of testing, we have determined a specific priority of performance-related settings:

 

  1. The complexity of the weather environment

    1. This includes the weather data and number of cloud layers, vertical development, number of drawn cloud sprites, and typically is not under the user’s control other than changing location, historical time period, or maximum number of cloud layers and other synthesis options that can affect the cloudscape complexity

  2. Cloud Draw Distance

    1. The configured cloud draw distance (which can vary dynamically with ASN/AS16 when using minimum and maximum values) drastically affects the number of cloud sprites shown.  The minimum acceptable distance should be used to achieve the best performance.

  3. 3D Cloud Texture Resolution

    1. When using third-party graphics add-ons that include cloud textures, care should be taken to reduce the texture resolution to a reasonable level to not overload your graphics card.  512x512 resolution is highly recommended in most cases.  The lower the resolution, the higher the performance.

  4. Graphics card and related settings

    1. While FSX/P3D do not make optimal usage of GPUs at this time, certain GPU settings including anti-aliasing and transparency anti-aliasing can greatly affect the frame-rate.  The minimum acceptable anti-aliasing settings should be used to achieve the best performance.

  5. ASN/AS16 Performance-related Settings

    1. As mentioned in #2, cloud draw distance has a significant effect on performance and memory. Values larger than 150 should be avoided, because they are associated with increased frequency of Out of Memory (OOM) cases and/or other abnormalities, such getting no clouds rendered.

    2. Most METARs contain a maximum of 2 to 3 cloud definitions. So, in most cases the Maximum Cloud Layer option should be set accordingly. Note, that this setting affects depiction where ASN/AS16 uses interpolation for cloud synthesis.

    3. Using local suppression mode can cause a significant increase in performance, especially during cloud transitions.  Enabling local suppression prevents smooth cloud redraws, reducing the number of cloud sprites to ½ in many cases.  We highly recommend using this feature if you’ve exhausted other attempts at improving performance.

Description

 

After running ASN, AS16 or ASP4 and your simulator, and connection is established, an Error message pops up and indicates “ASN/AS16/ASP4 cannot control ambient weather parameters correctly, thus it cannot function properly at this point and will shut down.  Further ASN/AS16 or AS_P3Dv4 operation is not possible. "

Alternatively, a similar "Ambients Error" and "Could not communicate with ASConnect" message may be presented.

 

 

 


 

Resolution

 

If you are receiving this error, it indicates one of the following conditions:

  1. If using Prepar3D, the most common explanation is that your paths are not set to the proper version 3 locations.  Specifically, your simulator installation path, simulator AppData path, and ASConnect installation path must be set to the Prepar3D locations.  Also ensure that the latest update for ASN/AS16/ASP4 for P3D is installed.  The latest version can be downloaded from www.hifisimtech.com/downloads .

  2. If using FSX Steam Edition, the most common explanation is that an add-on has created an improper sim AppData folder, and now ASN/AS16 is finding the wrong path based on the existence of this improper AppData folder.  This happens when the only sim installed is FSX:SE and FSX Boxed was never installed, and certain add-ons have been installed which create files in the wrong appdata location.  The solution is to keep your sim closed, run ASN/AS16, and change settings/options/general Simulator AppData Path to the correct location, which is most likely C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX.  Note that the improper folder in these cases is ..\FSX-SE (changing from FSX-SE to FSX will solve the issue).  After making this change, Restart ASN/AS16 and then start your simulator.
  3. ASConnect and the accompanying as_btstrp.dll (integration component to ASN/AS16/ASP4) is not able to run correctly due to security, AV, Firewall or File Access Rights issues.  Make sure you have excluded ASN/AS16/ASP4, FSX/P3D and the [sim folder]\as_srv\as_btstrp.dll file from scanning if you experience this error.

  4. ASConnect is not able to be properly configured to run at FSX/P3D startup due to invalid network share/rights to the Simulator's AppData Path (specifically, dll.xml cannot be modified).

  5. FSX/P3D Paths are not correctly configured.  First, try confirming your paths.  Without FSX/P3D running, load ASN/AS16/ASP4 and visit the Settings Screen.  In General Options, confirm that your Simulator and Simulator AppData Path are correctly configured.  If not, please select the proper paths and then restart ASN/AS16/ASP4.

If this does not resolve this issue, please follow the below steps:

  1. Please perform an uninstall of ASN/AS16/ASP4 in order to rule out any installation issues.  When uninstalling, all checkboxes should be checked to remove all saved data, ensuring a "clean" install environment

  2. Please disable real-time AV scanning temporarily (on networked setups, please do this on both machines)

  3. Install ASN/AS16/ASP4 using the latest full version installer from http://www.hifitechinc.com/downloads

  4. Run ASN/AS16/ASP4, and follow the prompts for final installation/configuration including the running of the ASConnect installer.  On networked setups, you will need to copy the ASConnect_FSX_Install.exe or ASConnect_P3D_Install.exe from the client's ASN/AS16/ASP4 install location to the server computer, and run the .EXE on the server.  Once this is done, finish loading ASN/AS16, then exit ASN/AS16.  *** MAKE SURE TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT INTENDED SIMULATOR/VERSION INSTALLATION FOLDER DURING ASCONNECT INSTALL ***

  5. Using your AV software, add a "trust" or "exclusion" to for the ASN/AS16/ASP4 program.

  6. Using your AV software, add a "trust" or "exclusion" for the ASConnect components which are all .dll files located in [fsx/p3d install path]\as_srv.  On a networked setup, this will be on your server machine.

  7. Re-enable your real-time AV scanning. 

  8. Run ASN/AS16 and allow it to initialize.

  9. Run FSX/P3D "as Administrator" (right click the icon, choose "Run as Administrator")

If everything is working properly and the "Cannot control ambient weather parameters" error no longer shows, you can now be confident that your configuration is correct.  

If the error continues, there may be a problem specific to your configuration.  In this case, please open a support ticket at http://support.hifitechinc.com with a Log Export (Tools->Export Logs) which can be done WITHOUT YOUR SIM RUNNING (to prevent the ambients error/shutdown).  See this link for REQUIRED INFORMATION when submitting a ticket:

When running ASN, AS16 ASP4 or ASP3D an error message pops up indicating “No ASConnect Log”.  In some cases, further ASN, AS16, ASP4 and ASP3D operation is not possible.

 



 


 

Resolution



Usually this is related to a path problem. Please confirm that your simulator's install location and AppData folder are properly selected in the settings screen.

 

You can also manually adjust the paths via the registry editor at location HKCU\SOFTWARE\HIFI\ASN(or AS16)FSX\FSXPATH (and FSXAPPDATAPATH) for FSX/FSX-SE, or HKCU\SOFTWARE\HIFI\ASN(or AS16)FSX\P3DPATH (and P3DAPPDATAPATH) for Prepar3D.

Detailed SimConnect Configuration Steps

 

Active Sky Next can be used in a networked configuration where FSX/P3D runs on a different computer (Deluxe + SP2 or Acceleration version is required if using FSX Boxed).

Allowing this to work requires proper networking and security configuration on both computers.  SimConnect will be used in networked client/server mode to facilitate the weather communications functions.  Networked file access will be used to pass data between ASN, XGauge and FSX/P3D station databases.

Sharing Folders

To properly use Active Sky Next in a networked configuration, you must have three folders shared on your FSX/P3D pc.  If you are not familiar with how to share folders please search the internet as there are many helpful resources.

Folders to share

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator X (or your FSX/P3D installation folder)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX or Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v3 (or if on Vista/7, C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX or Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v3)
  • C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files or Prepar3D v3 Files (or if on Vista/7, C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Flight Simulator X Files or Prepar3D v3 Files)

These folders should be shared with write permissions (Allow networked users to change my files).

If you are unable to locate these folders, you may need to enable "Show hidden and system files" in your VIEW options within Windows Explorer.

We recommend using the default share names for simplicity.

To confirm that you have sharing setup properly, attempt to access these shared from your remote/client computer.  You should be able to view (and write to) these folders through Windows Explorer (via the Network/[computername]/[sharename] path)
   

Important requirements for networked configuration:

  • FSX Gold + Acceleration/Deluxe version ONLY if using FSX Boxed (standard does not include the SDK or required SimConnect client installation files)
  • FSX Service Pack 2 (or later) update applied (http://www.fsinsider.com) if using FSX
  • FSX SDK installed from FSX Deluxe Disk 1 (\SDK folder setup.exe) if using FSX Boxed
  • FSX SDK SP1A (or later) update applied (http://www.fsinsider.com) if using FSX Boxed
  • FSX SDK SP2/Acceleration update applied (http://www.fsinsider.com) if using FSX (all SDK updates must be applied in order: Standard, then SP1A, then SP2/Acceleration
  • The computer to run FSX/P3D (hereby named SERVER) and the computer(s) to run SimConnect add-ons (hereby named CLIENT(s)) must be appropriately configured for normal IP networking
  • Firewall software must be configured to allow SimConnect communications on the port you set (we suggest port 500) – This includes windows firewall – and applies to all computers, both SERVER and CLIENT(s)
  • Remember to also open up port 19284 for radar data communication
  • Shared Folders must be properly configured

 

Step 1: Verify requirements

Look through the above requirements and ensure everything is setup properly and all FSX SDK & update installations have been run (if using FSX).

 

Step 2: Configure SERVER

There are two files which must be configured on the server.  They are:

  • [ApplicationDataFolder]\Microsoft\FSX (or Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v3)\SimConnect.xml
  • [MyDocumentsFolder]\Flight Simulator X Files (or Prepar3D Files)\SimConnect.ini


ApplicationDataFolder is:

For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\
For Vista/7: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\

MyDocumentsFolder is:
For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\My Documents\
For Vista/7: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\.

There are example files located in your SDK installation folder (normally C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Games\Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Core Utilities\SimConnect SDK\config).  We suggest copying these files to the appropriate locations and then modifying as follows:

SimConnect.xml:

You will need a local and global comms section in the simconnect.xml file.  The local is for local add-on connections (including the ASConnect component of ASN) and the global is for remote/networked connections (including the ASN client software).

The local section should be set as follows:

  </SimConnect.Comm>

For the global section:

  </SimConnect.Comm>

The values for Address and Port must be modified.  The other values should be left as shown.

For Address,
use either the computer name or the physical IP address of this SERVER.
Example: <Address>192.168.1.102</Address>

For Port,
use any port you wish to enable for SimConnect communications.  We suggest port 500.  This port will need to be enabled in any software firewall programs you are running (including windows firewall).
Example: <Port>500</Port>

 

Step 3: Installing SimConnect client on CLIENT(s)

For FSX, there is a simconnect.msi installation file located in the SDK installation folder\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\lib.  This file should be copied to each CLIENT machine and run in order to install the appropriate SimConnect client files.  Remember to update your SDK to SP2/Acceleration (if using FSX) before doing this.

For P3D, there the simconnect.msi is located in the P3D "REDIST" folder instead of "SDK" (use the XPACK/SP2 version).

 

Step 4: Configure CLIENT

There is a single configuration file needed on all clients:
[MyDocumentsFolder]\SimConnect.cfg

MyDocumentsFolder is:
For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\My Documents\.
For Vista/7: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\.

There is an example file located in your SDK installation folder (normally C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Games\Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Core Utilities\SimConnect SDK\config).  We suggest copying this file to the appropriate location and then modifying as follows:

The values for Protocol, Address and Port must be configured exactly the same as you have configured for the server’s SimConnect.xml file.  We recommend the other values be left default.

Here is an example SimConnect.cfg file:
[SimConnect]
Protocol=IPv4
Address=192.168.1.102
Port=500
MaxReceiveSize=4096
DisableNagle=0

The SimConnect.cfg file needs to be set for all client computers that will be running addons that need to connect to FSX/P3D on the server.

 

*** NOTE:  SIMCONNECT.CFG should NOT exist in any other location(s).  It needs to be placed only once in your "MyDocs" folder.  Any extra simconnect.cfg files (i.e. in your FSX appdata folder, or ASN install folder) will cause confusion and invalid configuration.

 

Step 5: Test the configuration

Using the samples provided in the SDK (FSX), you can easily test for proper networked simconnect configuration.  The AI Traffic.exe example program (located in the SDK Installation folder\SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\Samples\AI Traffic) should be run after the SERVER’s FSX/P3D has been started.  If successful, the AI Traffic program will bring up a console window indicating “Connected to Flight Simulator!”.  If unsuccessful, the program will run and end immediately without any “Connected” message shown. 

If using P3D, AI Traffic.exe is not included.  In this case, a successful ASN connection to the simulator is the best indicator of a proper simconnect configuration.

 

Step 6: Configuring ASN

Once you have the shares and SimConnect configuration complete, you can configure ASN to properly work in networked configuration.

ASN needs to know the location of the main Simulator installation path as well as the FSX/P3D Appdata path.  In addition, you may want to load FSX/P3D flight plans on the FSX/P3D computer into ASN on the client.  Since your shares are already configured you simply need to point ASN to these locations.  To do this, simply run ASN.  ASN will identify that FSX/P3D is not installed on the client machine and automatically ask for and save the correct network share locations.

If you need to manually specify these locations, you can set them using the Settings screen in ASN.  This should be done with the sim closed and not running.

 

Step 7: Configuring X Gauge

XGauge needs to be installed into the FSX/P3D installation.  To do this, you can run the XGauge Installation Wizard (from the ASN Tools menu).

Description


We've confirmed an issue with a recent update of AVG Antivirus FREE 2015 (may also apply to other versions/variants) in which ASNext.exe application is blocked from loading unless it is explicitly added as an excluded Program.

 

Our research indicates that the problem is isolated to the "Identity protection" feature, although strangely you cannot disable this feature by choosing disabled or "prompt" in settings. You must add the exclusion and ensure the identify protection is excluded for this program.

 

We have not yet confirmed, but we believe that ASN's initial contact with servers is causing this new "block". ASN is using normal HTTP calls, as we have been doing for several years, to establish online connection, verify current version, download news, and download weather and station database files. It should go without saying that any blocking here by AVG appears to be a bug or a false-positive, as our software in no way is doing anything malicious. Even AVG itself uses similar online calls as do thousands of other programs. Therefor we believe this is a problem that AVG needs to solve and we have contacted them accordingly.

 

Resolution


To get around this issue, you should exclude the ASNext.exe Program executable using the Options/Advanced/Exclusions settings area and ensure that the "Identity Protection" feature is disabled/excluded for this program.

What specs will be sufficient for ASN?

You will need the following requirements for your PC/Laptop:

How is Active Sky Next any different from AS2012?

Active Sky Next is much newer, in development for the past 3 years, focuses on weather simulation, and does not provide included graphics.  You can use any graphics add-on or default graphics with ASN.  The focus is on weather injection and simulation and includes new features such as accurate radar, cloud position awareness and associated effects, simplified weather modes, elimination of harsh cloud transitions, elimination of DWC mode (and its limitations), much better cloud accuracy, directly controlled ambient wx condition accuracy, new microburst simulation, re-designed wake turbulence simulation, and brand new UI, and much, much more.  The differences are immense, and represent a true breakthrough in weather simulation realism.  Seewww.activeskynext.com for more information.

 

 

Will graphics be available for ASN?

We are working on a graphics add-on to supersede our last graphics product (AS2012).  This will include full ASN integration.  However, any graphics add-on, including AS2012 can be used with ASN.  The graphics textures and other content are completely separate from the weather injection and simulation that ASN provides.  Graphics add-ons generally control only the graphics textures of clouds and other environmental items.  They do not control the actual conditions, clouds and weather parameters depicted.

 

 

Does ASN work with P3D?

Currently, ASN for FSX is about to be released and ASN for P3DV2 will follow very shortly after.  We may support Prepar3D v1.4, but this is undecided at this time.

 

 

Will ASN for FS9 be released?

Due to advanced techniques in depiction, we do not support FS9 which does not include advanced integration potential.  FSX and P3Dv2 are the only supported platforms at this time.  We do not anticipate the ability to create an FS9-compatible ASN version.

 

 

Will ASN for XPlane be released?

Possibly.  We are actively researching XPlane (current and expected versions) and determining suitability in depiction control.

 

 

Will an upgrade/discount be available for past AS users?

Yes.  We will be offering an upgrade path for past AS version customers.  Eligible version will include ASX, ASA, ASE and AS2012.

 

 

Does ASN simulate icing?

Yes.  We actively depict appropriate icing conditions in cloud layers appropriately.  It is up to FSX/P3D and/or the aircraft being used to depict such icing effects.  In default FSX icing effects, the pitot tube is effected quickly (requiring use of pitot heat) and airframe/prop icing are also simulated at a slower effective rate, but they do reduce lift performance after some time in icing.

 

 

How accurate are effects such as Microbursts?

We have painstakingly spent the past 3 years making features like this as realistic as possible, based on FAA, NWS, NTSB and other real-world information.  Generally, our MB events will be simulated with intense downdrafts, precipitated radially from strong thunderstorm cells, by a large increase in airspeed (positive windshear), followed by a large decrease in airspeed (negative windshear), while accompanying increasing downdraft intensities

 

 

Are all weather and graphical display issues with FSX/P3D solved with ASN?

We have worked very hard to eliminate most of the limitations of the FSX/P3D weather system, and have been successful in most regards.  Using theme cloud depiction, we have eliminated most gaps in overcast and provided a much more accurate cloud depiction based on reported weather depiction.  Using smooth theme reloads, we have eliminated nearly all harsh cloud pops/changes during cloud condition changes.  Using direct ambient weather control, we have eliminated quick changes in other parameters including wind direction/speed, temperature, dewpoint, visibility and pressure.  All general conditions are changed smoothly and accurately.  This however does not mean that we have solved every single depiction or graphical issue with FSX/P3D.  

 

 

What does “NO COMPROMISE WEATHER” mean?

In the past, in order to achieve accuracy and smoothness in certain areas of weather depiction, you would need to enable a weather depiction mode in Active Sky that focused on certain aspects.  For example, for the best in smooth and accurate winds, you would need “DWC” enabled (Direct Weather Control) which would provide great winds, but at the expense of possible harsh cloud transitions and inaccurate cloud depictions in general.  For the best in cloud depiction, you would need “Smooth Cloud Transitions” mode, but this would result in inaccurate and harshly-changing aloft winds.  With ASN, you can get the best of all depiction modes at all times.  Smooth and accurate cloud depictions are coupled with accurate and smooth wind aloft depiction at all times.  There are no further compromises in weather depiction modes necessary.  With ASN, you can have the best situation at all times, in any location, with any set of weather conditions.

 

 


 

Technical

 

I am experiencing strange turbulences/rolling/bumping motion on short final and/or when in the vicinity of other aircraft.  How can I prevent this?

ASN simulates wake turbulence.  To avoid wake turbulence, you should not fly within the recent path of a larger aircraft (remember, wake trails sink and drift with the wind).  When landing, you should always fly well above the path of preceding aircraft and land past their touch-down point.  When taking off, you should lift off before the preceding aircraft and fly above the vertical departure path.  When flying in formation, or when being towed in a glider, you should avoid the area directly behind and slightly below the preceding aircraft in order to avoid wake (although wake from similar-sized aircraft is minimal).  If you do not desire wake turbulence effects, you can turn them down (or off completely) using ASN options.

 

 

How can I increase frame rate performance in overcast or very complex cloud conditions?

Drawing overcast cloud layers is extremely taxing on the system.  You can disable “Enhance overcast conditions” to prevent overcast cloud layers from being doubled, which should provide a significant increase in performance.  You should also evaluate your cloud graphics textures in use.  Higher-resolution textures will result in lower performance, especially if used with “Enhance overcast conditions”.  You may also want to limit your Cloud Draw Distance, either statically or dynamically using the ASN Min/Max CDD options.  We suggest 90/90 as a good default setting, but you may want to adjust this for increased coverage range (higher CDD) or increased performance (lower CDD).

 

 

Why am I getting turbulence (CAT)?

Wind/Clear Air Turbulence can be generated by several things which include Sigmets (significant meteorological weather condition alerts specifying turbulence for a given area), thermal activity and terrain-based wind activity (drafts).  If you are flying within or near to a Severe Turbulence Sigmet zone (within the altitudes specified) or near significantly-sloped terrain with higher wind speeds, turbulence is likely.  To avoid turbulence, check the weather conditions and/or map to avoid such conditions, and/or try flying a different altitude.

 

 

How can I prevent certain clouds from showing a rectangular or square pattern when viewed from very high altitudes?

FSX controls cloud lighting and occasionally will render things like stratus clouds with less-than-desirable lighting effects.  This generally occurs with stratus cloud layers during lower-light levels such as dawn and dusk.  You can minimize or eliminate this effect by using "brighter" sky textures from your graphics add-on.

We have found that certain unauthorized versions of Active Sky (including previous version for other platforms) can modify system files, potentially install malware on the user's system, and attempt to spoof servers that Active Sky connects to.

If you have installed an unauthorized version of Active Sky, and subsequently attempt to run a legitimate licensed version of Active Sky, you may be subject to this issue.  This issue can be confirmed by reviewing your HOSTS file located at:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

If any "hifisimtech.com" or "hifitechinc.com" entries exist here, this confirms the spoofing and redirection of our servers which will not be able to connect.  If your system is affected by this, it is due to installing unauthorized software and the unauthorized system modifications it makes to attempt to bypass licensing and break into our data services.  Malware and other unintended negative changes on your system are common issues when using unauthorized software.

Description


Not enabling detailed clouds (and instead using simple non-3D clouds) will produce a block pattern on radar imagery including 3rd party NDs using Active Sky Radar integration.


This is a known configuration issue. The simulator is incorrectly set to simple (non-detailed) clouds which are essentially low-resolution rectangles and the radar/precipitation is correct given the low resolution of the precipitation boundaries in this mode.  



Resolution


To correct this issue, please follow these instructions:

 

  1. Open FSX or Prepar3D
  2. Go To Options/Settings/Display/Weather
  3. In the Cloud Details, enable Detailed Clouds
  4. Set to Cloud Density to Maximum

We often receive support tickets and forum posts regarding weather displaying differently than expected, such as visibility and cloud depiction.


 

Resolution

There are several things that could potentially cause this issue.  If you are running any other add-ons which contain a weather engine (i.e. Opus, FSUIPC, Rex?), please disable the weather engine feature in these products, as a conflict could cause errors in depiction.  Also, there are many settings in ASN that can affect weather depiction, such as:

  • Prevent downloads on approach
  • Suppress local weather changes
  • Prevent thunderstorms when CB reported
  • Cloud draw distance

These are just a few of the settings, but there are additional settings you will want to check under General options, Simulator Depiction options, Cloud options, Wind options, Visibility options, and Visual fix options.

If you are experiencing different weather than expected, please note what weather station you are directly under and what the actual weather is directly over that station.  Most times, the weather station is reporting exactly what is being displayed, even though the weather may be very different nearby.

If none of these suggestions help resolve your issue, please open a support ticket at support.hifitechinc.com and provide as much detail as possible, including:

1) A screenshot of the weather station's conditions screen and METAR information

2) A screenshot of the map with cloud coverage and weather station overlays enabled, in detailed mode (lock to aircraft and click detail lock), max range (usually 90, CDD setting)

3) A Log Export (Tools->Export Logs) which can be done WITHOUT YOUR SIM RUNNING if necessary.

In addition, please understand that Active Sky does not depict weather like other weather add-ons and default FS weather (which may be using a global depiction). Expecting weather to be "global" in nature and the same at all spots is unrealistic. With Active Sky, you will likely see different weather 10/15/100 miles away, because every area/cell can have a different set of conditions and a different cloud scene. One must look all all the surrounding weather stations/weather picture in order to understand.

Description

We have received a few isolated reports of high CPU usage by ASNext.exe/AS16.exe during the course of a flight.  Our research has determined that this is caused by system issues or interference with over-aggressive antivirus software.  The actual issue appears to only affect a very small percentage of users, suggesting that there are multiple factors involved, such as computer specs, other software installed, specific configuration, etc.

 


 

Resolution

1) Run virus scan
2) Apply all windows updates
3) Run chkdsk /f (google for more information) to rule out any disk issues
4) Run sfc /scannow (google for more information) to rule out any windows resource issues
5) Ensure exclusion from any real-time scanning of ASNext.exe/AS16.exe and as_btstrp.dll (sim install\as_srv folder) by AV software
6) Ensure exclusion from ports 445, and 19284 (Pipe/file sharing comms and AS radar port) TCP, Incoming by firewall software

Description

 

If you are using Norton 360 for your security software, be aware that there are known cases of micro-stutters and audio skips when using Active Sky. This is an apparent incompatibility related to Active Sky’s radar data communications and the aggressive scanning nature of Norton 360 components (which cannot be disabled, even when configured to be disabled!).  We are actively working on a long-term solution to work around this issue with Norton 360.  The actual issue appears to only affect a small percentage of users, suggesting that there are other factors involved, such as computer specs, other software installed, specific configuration, etc.

 


 

Resolution

 

If you are using Active Sky and Norton 360, and experiencing this issue, at this time we recommend looking into alternative Security Software. There are many Anti-Virus/Security Software solutions available and links have been provided below.  We highly recommend using Windows Firewall (included with all recent versions of Windows) for your firewall/IP security instead of other “all in one” IP/firewall solutions which may consume large amounts of system resources and impose significant network overhead (potentially leading to stutters and skips).

Malwarebytes anti-malware software IP protection feature will aggressively scan all network communications and can cause performance issues including, sound pops and cracks or micro stutters.

 

These issues become more apparent with large amounts of network data communications such as, ASN/AS16 radar and cloud position communications between server and client components.

 

 


 

Resolution

 

In order to remedy this situation FSX/P3D , ASN/AS16, and ASConnect components must be explicitly excluded from IP/Firewall scanning.
